Nonprofits First Accreditation staff Todd L’Herrou and Adriene Tynes recently completed a study of the gender gap in nonprofit executive compensation in Palm Beach County. The study also compared organizations accredited by Nonprofits First with those who are not.
The study was published in Nonprofit Management & Leadership, one of the leading research journals in the field. The Nonprofits First team found that in Palm Beach County, female chief executives average 12% less compensation than male executives, after controlling for organizational size. The significant difference between genders was found in the non-accredited sample; the findings hint that any trend towards pay equity in the accredited organizations would be due to a pattern of the male chief executives in that group being paid less than their male counterparts in non-accredited organizations.
